Merry Christmas!

Since Christmas is just around the corner I figured I should go along with it and post some rad Christmas albums for you to get your self in the spirit.

Download - Feels Like Christmas Compilation

This is a cool little Christmas compilation cd I got for free from JB HIFI. It has your favourite Christmas carols sung by your favourite artists! such as Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Boney M., Wham!, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and New Zealands very own Yulia!

Download - Rorys Xmas Album

This is the infamous Xmas album made by Rory Dunne of Leader To Ruin. He wrote and recorded most of the songs himself.

A Great Comedian

Download "Bill Hicks"

Download "Bill Hicks - Infamous 'Loses It' Show"

No introduction should be needed for Bill Hicks, you should already know his stuff. If you don't then check it out.

I have no clue what the first download is called but it's good. The second one is a recording of his "Infamous 'Loses It' Show" where Bill yells at a woman in the crowd. You should get both.

Here are the videos of David Letterman apologising to Bill Hicks' mother for removing Bills set from the Late Show on October 1st 1993. These videos also include the removed set.

Rackets

Download Rackets Demo here

Rackets are the by-product of Auckland trio, The Randoms.

A few months back The Randoms said goodbye to drummer, Isaac Johnson. In turn they recruited Jeremy from BMX Rapists and God Bows To Math to take up the empty space. A name change to Rackets also came with the line up change.

The members of Rackets don't have set musical positions in the band (except Oscar who just loves to vocalise his vocal stylings), basically they switch between instruments through out their set. It's pretty interesting to watch.

Musically they are upbeat and catchy yet chaotically unpredictable.
Loud, noisy and messy but still keep it all together.

Rackets are gearing up to record an album. But in the mean time have a hoon on this 4 track demo - WOO DEMO

Track List:
1. A Thousand Stairs At Night
2. Qing Song
3. Mr Finn
4. A Question
5. Audrey Kishline

An Emerald City are an experimental, ambient instrumental band from New Zealand but I think they are now located in Berlin. This band, in my opinion is amazing. They have an almost Middle Eastern/Indian sound, this is done with the use of violin(or some sort of string instrument),the Sitar and the Tubla(I think I heard that somewhere in there). Very psychedelic.

A whole lot of reviews of their latest album, Circa Scaria can be viewed on An Emerald City's Myspace page.

Mean Streak are a newish Hardcore band from Hamilton. Rising from the ashes of This Is This and containing members from many well known past/current hardcore bands in NZ, they haven't had that much trouble finding their feet and gaining a following in the local hardcore scene. Similar musically to This Is This, Mean Streak seem to be more mature lyrically. Mean Streak's influences include Blood For Blood and Death Threat.

Pig Destroyer

Download Pig Destroyer - Natasha

Natasha is an EP released by Pig Destroyer in 2008. It was originally packaged with Terrifyer as a 5.1 surround sound DVD but then was re released as its own CD. Natasha is a 38 minute track which expresses Pig Destroyers Sludey/Doomy side. The single track consists of multiple tracks and audio samples that all build and blend together to make one track.

(from Wiki)
1-1:10 Birds chirping, setting a peaceful park setting as the lyrics allude.

1:10-3:30 A much more eerie tone is set, around 3:10 church bells ring.

3:30-5:14 As a tonal note plays in the background, the first couple lines of the song are whispered quietly.

5:15-10:00 A simplistic doom metal song begins, and vocals come in at 7:56.

10:00-10:23 Whispering begins again.

10:24-13:00 A second doom metal song begins, and the vocals are closer to the vocals heard on Terrifyer.

13:00-15:45 A harsh feedback-esque noise is heard, with samples used from Gravedancer.

15:45-18:50 The feedback turns into a low hum, and a peaceful slow instrumental song is played.

18:50-20:40 The song is replaced by the sound of raindrops and continued whispering.

20:40-31:04 A third doom metal song begins, very close to the second, and the tonal note heard at 3:30-5:14 can be heard again. vocals come in at 24:10. at 25:51 The song stops and raindrops can be heard again. The song continues at 26:36, and fades out at 31:04.

31:05-37:55 The song stops and increasingly heavy rain is heard.

Sworn To The King

Download "Sworn To The King"

Track List:
I/II
III
IV
V

Sworn To The King's myspace page

Sworn To The King were a 4 piece band from Auckland containing members of The Randoms, Grind Thugs, and a Spanish dude from a band called Enoch Aardon. Sworn To The King were around for the beginning months of 2009 and in that time they played only 2 or 3 shows and released an EP. Sadly they were forced to disband as Spanish guitarist, Ruben Quiros had to go back to Spain.

Sworn To The King play dirty, noisy and sort of depressing sounding Post Punk (remember I'm not too good with deciphering genres, so I'm probably wrong on the "Post Punk" call), drawing influences from Joy Division and Grey Daturas. Their songs consist of epic, loud and messy parts which will suddenly change into calmer yet sort of "boppy" sounding parts, similar to those heard in Joy Division or The Pixies.

No Greater Power s/t EP

I've been reluctant to put this up for some reason, I don't know why. Anyways here you go, No Greater Power's first ever EP containing 5 tracks.

Track Listing:
Intro
Lay 'Em Out
You Will Fall
Self Up
Caught Red Handed

No Greater Power is my first ever band that me and some mates formed in high school.

At the moment I'm not quite sure what's going on with NGP. We haven't played a show since November '08 I think, and haven't had a proper practice since long before then. We did have a jam a few weeks ago and almost finished a new song so I guess there's still hope for the good old N.G.P.

Check out my newer band, Buzzkill. We will have a demo out shortly.

Shortlived's Last NZ Shoe

May 1st (this coming Friday) Shortlived will be playing their last ever NZ show. Come along and see them off. Drug Problem, Buzzkill and Psychic Jams are the supporting acts. I think it's $10 at the door and it will be starting round 7 and finishing quite early because of noise control problems.

Come to this show! it will be the last ever time you get to see Shortlived. You can see Antagonist any day.

Friday 3rd of April

Buzzkill and some other pretty sweet Hardcore bands are playing this coming Friday at Basement Bar. It's an all ages venue that also has a bar so over 18s can get drunk and the younger kids can watch! ..... or just end up outside in Myers park with a 40 (which is probably way more fun than drinking from an expensive bar).

It's only $5 entry and there will be a mixtape swap box so you can swap your fave mix tapes with other fools. So get those mix tapes done and get down to the show on Friday and get a swappin'

This will also be Blackout's last show so come along to give them a good send off.

Check out the bands before if you havn't heard them!

The Deadline

The Deadline were a technical Metallic Hardcore band (the best i can describe them) from Wellington New Zealand.

The are yet another band i never actually got to see live, due to being too young or just being stupid.... a bit of both probably.

"A refreshing blend of punk hardcore, old school metal and chaotic dischordance. The last release upon their breakup" - From an Action Man Records(NZ HC label) poster that I have in my room.

Cathedra

Cathedra formed in 2002 in Palmerston North. Influenced by Lamb of God, At the Gates, The Black Dahlia Murder and Darkest Hour, they play dark yet melodic sounding style of metalcore.

I somehow have a bunch of their demos. I think I got given one in '05 by some dude at school who reckons that he's friends with Cathedra. I managed to get the other ones from their Myspace or some other internet source.

I know that two of the demos are the full thing but I'm not too sure about the third one? I duno. anyways here ya go. These guys are pretty badass if you like bands like At The Gates and The Black Dahlia Murder.

Frontline

Frontline have released (so far) my favourite NZ Hip Hop ever. I listen to this shit almost daily.

"David Dallas (aka Con Psy) and producer 41 (Nick Maclaren) are the two man team known as Frontline. The combination of Dave's masterful lyrical ability and 41's superbly crafted beats makes for some of the most intelligent and vital hip-hop music to arise from these shores. Not about hype or flashy gimmicks, these two strike you immediately as true musical artists. Their music is a cut above the typical New Zealand rap release. " - Muzic.net.nz

"Frontline are the most important rap group in New Zealand, period" - P-Money.

So fucking true. Everything I have heard from these dudes is amazing. I get excited every time I listen to 'Borrowed Time'. I buzz out on David's lyrics and form. Gah. must sound like a right faggot, but fuck it, I love this shit.

Brutes?¿

Were Brutes a hardcore band from West Auckland? Did I manage to get two of their recorded songs before they were even heard by the band, because I'm more sneaky than Morgan, their apparent vocalist?

Am I putting them up for free download ¿

Did they even exist?

I can't find any information on them...

hurr hurr.

Misadelphia

I know absolutely nothing about this band. Got a free EP from Misfit Theater a few years back. Thought it was quite rad. Quite experimental if that's what you call it? I use to spin this EP so much and still enjoy the occasional listen to it. Looking at their Myspace it doesn't seem they are still functioning.

Where's Gary's Duvet

Don't know much about this band. What I do know is that the members I have met are good as dudes and that they 'officially' broke up in 08? ot late 07? Where's Gary's Duvet played comedic Ska music, very upbeat and mostly funny, or trying to be funny. Oh they also played my high school ball once.

They released an EP called 'Supplying Alcohol to Minors Since ’04', check it:

And Ben (Iky) has started a zine called 'shrapnel' more info about it at http://www.myspace.com/shrapnelcollectivenz

The Randoms

The Randoms are a 3 piece rock 'n' roll act from Ellerslie, Auckland. Influences contain the likes of Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Nirvana and Joy Division. Fuckn good cunts, good as to have a drink with and play mean as music. I think they got 1st placement in the '07 Auckland Regional Finals for The Smoke Free Rockquest? can't remember...

Oh shit, it appears they are also going on tour with The Datuns and An Emerald City. Awesome. I think I had a drunken conversation with the drummer about this a few weeks ago but it sort of slipped my mind. Click HERE for tour dates.

Anyway. They're constantly releasing EPs and Demos and such. I have no idea how many they've done, I'm sure they don't know either. But I'm guna let you hoon on their 2007 'Not All As It Seems' EP. It's not their latest released and their sound has much progressed since the release of this CD, nevertheless it's still a great little thing. For a better look at what their sound has become or is evolving into, check their Myspace page.
